THE ROLE OF AI TECHNOLOGIES IN DEVELOPING THE PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCE OF ENGLISH LANGUAGE TEACHERS

Abstract

This article analyses the role of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies in developing the professional competence of English language teachers, their pedagogical potential, and the methodological conditions required for their effective use. In contemporary education, the development of AI technologies is transforming the content of teachers’ professional activities and bringing such areas as lesson design, educational material development, personalised learning, assessment, feedback provision, and pedagogical reflection to a new level. Systematic studies published in 2026 indicate that language teachers are using generative AI (GenAI) technologies for lesson planning, the development of educational materials, and the support of writing activities; at the same time, they reveal competency needs related to AI literacy, technical skills, ethical decision-making, and data privacy. The article also proposes a pedagogical model for developing English language teachers’ competence in working with AI technologies.
