Abstract. This article investigates the agro-technical, ecological and economic efficiency of growing Indigofera under irrigation with domestic wastewater as an alternative water resource under conditions of limited water availability. The possibilities of recycling nutrients contained in domestic wastewater, reducing the demand for freshwater irrigation and maintaining soil fertility were analyzed. The biological characteristics of Indigofera, its water requirements, root development and potential contribution to soil nitrogen balance as a leguminous crop were considered. The results indicate that, when appropriately treated and subjected to sanitary and chemical monitoring, domestic wastewater can potentially be reused for the cultivation of suitable non-food or industrial crops such as Indigofera, contributing to efficient water-resource management, nutrient recycling and environmental sustainability.
